ART MATTERS FESTIVAL 2010

Catherine Wakim

The Art Matters Festival 2010 presents Material Applied, an experimental design exhibition, which looks to explore the relationship between object and material through the facets of design. Designers are asked to experiment with the idea of what one considers material, by finding the potential use in matter which is often overlooked.

The show touches upon the many fields of design, such as furniture design, jewelry design, graphic design and object design. Examples include a chair made of bungee chords; necklaces made of thrown away pieces of drywall; refurbished traditional elementary school desks transformed into coffee tables; and the ability for newspaper to be utilized as wallpaper. Through the creation of functional works, the unique properties of these chosen materials become apparent as viable options in the future creation of new design solutions.
