Biography

Damien Comment lives and works in Basel, Switzerland. In 1997, he began his studies in visual arts at the FHBB (University of Applied Science Basel, Faculty of Art and Design) where he achieved graduation as a teacher in visual arts and art history. His works are now regularly exhibited at the Daeppen Gallery in Basel. In 2007, he received a grant from the Canton of Jura (Switzerland), which gave him the opportunity to reside at the International City of Arts in Paris. Apart from his work as an artist, he teaches art and art history at a college.

Artist Statement

An interest in sexual and political identity and its place within contemporary society is the essential subject of Damien Comment's work. His hybrid drawing-paintings, mainly the large ones, seem sketchy and unfinished leaving the viewer disturbed and fascinated. Damien Comment shows the youth propelled into a mysterious fog of hormonal awakening and emotional maturity. The exposed scenes slide from reality to a state of daydreaming. Desire, threats, presentiments and warnings, all take place on a delicate ground.
