LORNA BAUER

blackout .....

Each of the video works, Horizon, Blackout and Kaleidoscope depict states of transformation. The first transformation that occurs is a material unfolding over time. I assembled provisional constructions in predetermined environments as my departure point. Common materials such as paper, mirrors, and light bulbs become part of, or constitute, these constructions, which interact directly with the space. They move from a state of wholeness to disintegration; they present a vision of collapse, a break down, or an implosion. It is within this transformative state that a process of entropy occurs, an unfolding that slides from order to disorder.

Another transformation that occurs as a result of this entropic process is a perceptual renegotiation of the spaces seen in each video. This is viewed through the “window” of a video projection. My goal is to investigate this perceptual shift as a means to explore “modes of paying attention”: to pay attention to how we pay attention and to generate a desire to want to pay even closer attention.

I used simple tropes to trick, to create illusions. All of these works fall apart at the seams; the wires are visible in Horizon, the corner of the mirror pokes out in Kaleidoscope and the bulbs artificially move in Blackout. They function like early silent films or slapstick that poignantly suggest tragedy through symbolic comic action. These works become lenses through which one can perceive one’s own perception. They are a way to acknowledge that perception is mutable; it has the ability to shift and transform.
