Artist Statement
The works of this series are part of an artistic research dealing with the aesthetics of trace, matter and image appropriation. The importance of the gesture is seen through the application of plaster and paint, scratches, marks and the “cutting-out” of figures and shapes. This method translates aesthetic concerns such as colour, form and composition and a reflection on the representation of history through archival images. These works tend to renew a traditional pictorial vocabulary, while questioning the process and the implication of appropriation – recapturing historical images. If at first, the chosen photographs relate scenes of figures in motion, in the paintings, the action is fixed, deactivated and suspended. It’s also by the use of plaster as background, allowing mark making and imprints that are created timeless and abstract spaces. Without any inscribed narrative, the focus always shifts back to the surface, to the colours and the lines.
