DE-PRESSIVE PERSPECTIVES/CONSTRUCTION SCULPTURES
I seek to work in opposition to the idea of the straight line, of the single departure point, of the closed process. My projects are designed to be "open" in form, positioning, and logic. I asked myself the question, "What does it mean to inhabit a place?" First as I made my way through the site becoming attuned to the space, and subsequently through my sculptures. From the large sculptures that integrate or disperse the space to the small sculptures and drawings that fit themselves to smaller allotments, these pieces function with an awareness of the space they occupy. They propose a more supple and skillful usage, and hold out the possibility of rehabilitation.
The forms arrived at are close to particular architectural projects and their models; however, these pieces present themselves as exploded structures, weightlessly floating between the void and the filled portions of the reformulated environment of the exposition room. It is in this way that openings appear: windows, piercings, portal openings onto new perspectives. I call them "de-pressives," entities that seek to escape the pressurized narrowness of an overly controlled vision. These perspectives seek suppleness and flexibility.
