TERRA INCOGNITA : Stories of Imaginary Places | Caroline Kelley
This exhibition is the culmination of three interconnected, autobiographical projects all of which consider the notion of travel, tourism and exploration, and the problematic use of the photograph as well as the diary as documentary devices to create an authentic record. The title is inspired by the latin term for "unknown land," meaning terrestrial regions that have not yet been mapped. It has since developed to be metaphor for the unexplored, the unknown and that which is deeply rooted in the imaginary.
In 2000, Caroline Kelley graduated from the New York Academy of Art (MFA Program). She has been awarded grants and fellowships, notably from the Cliff Lede Family Charitable Foundation (Banff Centre for the Arts) and from the Joan Mitchell Foundation (Santa Fe Art Institute). Caroline's projects have been shown in exhibitions in the United-States and Europe. She currently teaches in the Métiers du Livre program at the Université Paris-Ouest Nanterre La Défense and edits the open access journal /thirdspace: a journal of feminist theory & culture/, splitting her time between Paris and Montreal.
