CHANTS DE LASSITUDE

Erika Kierulf

May 22nd to June 9th, 2009
Vernissage, Friday May 22nd, 5 to 8pm

erika

Speaking to issues of loss, absence and a desire to escape, Chants de lassitude is an exhibition of recent works by Erika Kierulf. The photographic series I believe in this explores a process of renewal whereby the characters shelter or hide themselves from the viewers’ gaze. Visual obstructions consider our innate sense for seeking safe places. The installation It’s all the same to you, comprised of over 60 birdcages suspended from the ceiling, fills an adjacent room. The empty cages leave evidence of a solitary bird; perhaps even a couple, that once lived in the enclosures.

Biography

Erika Kierulf lives and works in Montreal. In 2007, she completed an MFA in Studio Art at Concordia University (Montreal), and a residency the following year at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Her photographic and installation work has been shown in Canada, Sweden, and Indonesia. She has exhibited at the Eastern Edge Gallery in St. John’s, Newfoundland, La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse in Montreal, most recently at the Museo de la Ciudad in Querétaro, Mexico.
