RÉMINISCENCE
Julie Côté

Exhibition from 12 to August 31th 2010
Vernissage: Thursday, August 12 at 6pm

Réminiscence is an exploration of memories long buried within all of us. Julie Côté produces eight portraits, where each subject is drawn with an animal that represents the person within. Using both video and photography each portrait is based on a mise en scene created in collaboration with the subjects.

Her singular way of working is the result of hybridization. Her work in drawing is influenced by her practices in cinema and photography, where the subject participates in the process of creation. This multidisciplinary approach is at the root of her exploration, which tries to create a representation where body and essence fuse together.

From Cinema and photography, she uses the notion of mise en scene, composition, segmentation and fragmentation. From one discipline to the other she attempts to establish a constant methodology working with each model. By abandoning to the experience each model finds themselves in a space intertwined between what they project, and what they believe they are projecting. It is in this space that the elusive surges, which she tries to capture.

A multidisciplinary artist, Julie Côté holds a major in cinema from l’ Université du Québec à Montréal and a minor in Studio Arts, from Concordia University. She explores the thematic of portraits through different Medias, from fiction, to documentary film, photography and drawing. She lives and works in Montréal.
