LIGHT MATTER

Leslie Bell

August 22nd to September 5th 2009
Vernissage: Saturday, August 22nd, 2- 5pm

__________

Leslie Bell's work is rooted in abstract painting, but over the past year she has been branching out her colorful organic forms into a multidisciplinary practice. Along with paintings, drawings and collage work on paper, Leslie Bell's exhibition "Light Matter" features a wall installation composed of painted mylar, paper and wood cut-outs built into an expansive and accumulative pile of cosmic wonderment. She is also making her debut as a video artist, showing projections of two animated projects, "Sunshine 1" and "Tumult 3", which are composed of hand-made cel-animation and paint over back-lit glass respectively. Both of these pieces are explorations into generative growth, permutation and entropic movement.

Leslie Bell is a Calgary based visual artist. She received her BFA from Alberta College of Art & Design in 2002, and she is currently working towards her MFA in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University, Montreal. In 2008, Leslie Bell had the opportunity to attend the Thematic Residency "Cosmic Ray Research" at the Banff Centre and she also received the QAS/NFB Production Scholarship from Quickdraw Animation Society in Calgary, Alberta. Leslie's studio practice is motivated by media experimentation, methodical process and a fascination with the infinite number of ways that forms could be assembled to build composition.
