Héliport marks the arrival of new paintings by Sarah Rooney circling around a conversation with landscape. Interested in the slowness of the studio process, which opens up a space of reflection, she approaches landscape as a meeting place of an ‘alphabet of marks’. Like silent markers of time, minimal spatial-line-paintings, including a horse in transit and a helicopter in flight, act as counterpoints to color-filled landscapes. Weaving together traces of displacement and mobility through line and color, the paintings unravel a world of painterly vocabulary from subtle meticulousness to the vibrancy of musical gesture.
Sarah Rooney was born in South Africa. She studied at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London England before obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montreal (1997) and a Master of Fine Arts from York University in Toronto (2001). Her work, which includes painting and video, has been exhibited in Canada and the US. She currently lives and works in Montreal.
